Reasoning in Epistemic Contexts

چکیده

“Epistemology is about to leave philosophy and join the sciences as other disciplines have done in the past. Briefly, work on the artificial intelligence problem (i.e. the problem of making machines, specifically electronic computers, behave intelligently) will require a theory of how knowledge can be obtained by a system in interaction with its environment, what knowlege is (i.e. its mathematical structure), and what the limits of knowledge are. This is just the domain of epistemology.” (McCarthy Papers, 1958-1962)

Combining sceptical epistemic reasoning with credulous practical reasoning ( corrected version ) 1

This paper proposes an argument-based semantics for combined epistemic and practical reasoning, taking seriously the idea that in certain contexts epistemic reasoning is sceptical while practical reasoning is credulous. The new semantics combines grounded and preferred semantics. A dialectical proof theory is defined which is sound and complete with respect to this semantics and which combines ...

Conceptual Reasoning in Multi-agent Environments|partiality, Intensionality, Inconsistency and Preference Conceptual Reasoning in Multi-agent Environments

In this paper a knowledge representation language is related to a framework of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA). A logical formalism has FCA contexts on its semantic side, and formal conceptual systems as proof theories. Agents are associated with (sets of) consistent sources of information, and every source gives rise to a single theory. A family of theories is formed and it is used to build a co...

A Logic of Knowledge and Strategies with Imperfect Information

In this paper we put forward Epistemic Strategy Logic (ESL), a logic of knowledge and strategies in contexts of imperfect information. ESL extends Strategy Logic by adding modal operators for individual and collective knowledge. This enhanced framework allows us to represent explicitly and to reason about the knowledge agents have of their own and other agents’ strategies. We provide a semantic...

Conceptual Reasoning Conceptual Reasoning Belief, Multiple Agents and Preference

One of the central issues in the area of knowledge representation and reasoning is common sense reasoning. This includes logics of knowledge and belief, nonmonotonic reasoning, truth-maintenance, and belief revision. Within these elds the notion of a consistent belief state is the crucial one. Additionally, there is a growing interest in partial information states. Within this interest informat...

Distributed Defeasible Reasoning in Multi-Context Systems

Multi-Context Systems (MCS) are logical formalizations of distributed context theories connected through a set of mapping rules, which enable information flow between different contexts. Reasoning in MCS introduces many challenges that arise from the heterogeneity of contexts with respect to the language and inference system that they use, and from the potential conflicts that may arise from th...
